Documentary forum

1) I can't say I understand the rationale behind then new forum, and I think it opens some classification cans of worms, but I figured no big deal as long as it improves the board or at least doesn't hurt it. BUT... the removal of the [REL] and [REQ] tags in the forum listing is TERRIBLE.

If putting releases and requests together is such a good thing, then why were separate Release and Request fora ever created in the first place? I have no problem at all with intermingling the two in the same forum, as long as they are labelled. In fact that's how (with hindsight, of course) I think all the country fora should be, and that would save admin time moving threads when a REQ becomes a REL. But that's the past. For now, please at least put the [REQ] [REL] tags back for documentaries.

2) You missed a couple. Here's the results from a quick search and plus some others that sprang to mind. Later I can look for more if needed.

Maybe we should call it the non fiction forum? :think

Nah, then reality series would qualify, which would probably be a bad thing. And think of how many dramatizations of actual events could qualify (e.g. Amber's Story).

Honestly, I'd rather like that. :bigups

As far as dramatisations go, they are fiction (albeit based on fact) and should be treated as such. The Titanic (Kate Wislet, et. al.) is a dramatisation of an actual event, but we all agree that it is not a documentary. However, I have seen documentaries about it on Discovery and National Geographic.

I found a very interesting site (sorry - Rapidshare only - you can stop grinning, Amadeus and charlottegainsbourg1) which has documentaries and shorts, besides the regular movies, some of which are FLM material. Perhaps someone with more bandwidth and time than I have could go through these and decide which ones the rest of us should get.

Thanks FLL, for your efforts.

However the rational seems obvious to me. 'Documentaries' are quite different from 'movies' and they deserve to be gathered together for those who have a specific interest in veiwing them..

Reality-based TV shows I think absolutely belong in the 'Documentary' forum as even though they are somewhat 'staged' events [set-up premises], they are 'documents' of what happens when people are put in certain situations, with certain boundries.

Movies like 'Amber's Story' [or any crappy Lifetime-Movie-Channel-based-on-a-real-story-tearjerker] would NOT belong there as they are fictionalized accounts, no matter how accurate they deem themselves to be.

I think ghost made a valiant effort yesterday in getting the Documentary Forum started up! :cool

Thanks again for the list. When discussing creating this section amoung the admins, it was brought up that a good bit of work would have to go into searching out and moving each of the existing documentary threads scattered throughout the different forums.

I'll have to admit, you've probably cut our work load MORE than in half. Many kudos to you!! :thumbsup

kev.

Clearly see the rationale of doing this. Documentaries rarely touch the thematic summoned in the forums name, but there are some out there that can be posted to FLM, and for those i think it can be wise to have a separate forum.

If simplicity is the reason for grouping [REL] & [REQ],, subforums may work better under each country.

Hmmm, documentaries are not movies certainly, however, since when was society's or the education community's perception of on-topic material entirety true.... Their non-fiction seems like fiction to me. :think
