You place them in the same folder as the movie and make sure it has exactly the same name as the movie (except for the extension, of course). Then the video player (eg. VLC and others) will pick up the subtitles automatically.

You can also start playing the movie, and then drag the subtitle file onto the video window.

Actually, I'm having the same problem too and I pretty much exclusively use VLC. (Occasionally the WinLan viewer.)

It doesn't pick the subs up [EVER from my experience] and when I try to drag them into the window as the movie plays, the movie stops and the play/pause button does that little bouncey-back-and-forth thing it does when it gets a file it can't figure out.

I went into 'properties' and tried everything I could to find something that would enable subs, but to no avail... (Even checked the 'Advanced Settings' when it would allow me to...) :(

If the players are designed to do this, dammit, why won't mine? Am I doing something wrong?? Grrrr

Any help/advice would be appreciated.

My version runs just fine, picking up subs (or tracking to screen window). Actual version is VLC 0.9.4. What version do you use?

If my memory serves me correctly cg1 likes to transcode & burn to DVD for playing on standalone DVD players. ConvertXtoDVD will do this & handle subtitle files. If exactly the same file name & in the same directory it will automatically load the subtitle, otherwise you need to add it manually. Version 3 of ConvertXtoDVD appears unsatisfactory.........go for the last release of Version 2. This is not free software but available everywhere with keys, keygens, cracks & patches. I'll let someone else explain the pros/cons & how they work ;)

kev: Does it do that with all subs or just a few? Maybe the subs are in a format VLC can't recognize fully. Try opening those subs with Subtitle Workshop and saving them as srt again (new file name).

hmm i've always liked Divx subtitle displayer, it's simple to use and doesn't use heaps of memory a bit like media player classic, just drag and drop the sub file onto the player, then drag and drop the movie and it plays both :bigups
