The latest statistics show that one girl in six reaches puberty before the age of eight – the agreed definition of precocious puberty – and 1 in 14 boys.
And girls are now reaching puberty 18 months before their mothers and almost two years before their grandmothers.
In this programme, Tonight’s Fiona Foster asks what the causes are and whether doctors are downplaying the physical and psychological effects.
She speaks to four UK families whose children have started puberty at ages ranging between three and six. In a remarkably open and emotional account, the mothers and their daughters talk about the trials and tribulations of being physically grown up but not emotionally or mentally mature.
