"I'd rather take part in that programme where they swap wives," says Denise Welch, best known for playing hopeless teacher Steph in Waterloo Road. "I'd even rather sleep with Paul Daniels. Not a lot, but..." This is the first of an occasional series in which actors work at the same job that their characters do, so the actress is rather nervously going back to her old secondary school in Consett, Durham, to try teaching for a week. You might think that as she's used to standing on stage with an audience staring at her or in front of the cameras, she surely must be able to perform her way out of anything. But apparently not. Her first attempt meets with a sea of blank faces, the next with noisy anarchy. And inevitably there are crises of confidence, temper tantrums and tears. The result tells us as much about the actress as it does about the pressures and pleasures of teaching.
