Renaming files
I've long had a "filing" system that renames the movies I download into something like "Movie Name, The (YEAR).avi" (for example "Alex in Wonderland (1970).avi"). This is so I can find the file easily and also makes putting them in an index like Ant Movie Catalog (which I recommend highly) a lot easier. I do this not to take away credit for someone's hard work in encoding and/or posting (for which I'm deeply grateful), but because until I started using eMule I was too paranoid to post (or re-post) anything myself so it made no difference.
I've downloaded a bunch of movies based on the great links in this forum and I move them to either a "Movies" folder if I haven't watched them yet or a "Done" folder if I have. Both these folders are in eMule's setup and I leave them shared on the hard drive so I can give some payback. My question is whether it's OK that I rename them - will this screw anybody up? I know the file hash is the same, I just don't want to make it harder for people to get the files. If renaming them causes problems, I can create a folder to copy the original to, and burn the renamed file to DVD and remove it from the hard drive.
What's the wisdom of the forum on this?[/u]

Re: Renaming files
First of all Thank you for sharing.
many here just download and run.
changing the name should be ok. the hash is the same it will load the same. emule will usually show a + sign that you click to see alternate file names.
just as long as you don't change the name to a hateful or disrespectful description all should be fine. many here have changed the names of some of my files for the same purpose as you. (easier categorizing). i some times put a odd spelling so i can track who is downloading and from where. especially if its a big release.
this being said it is only my view. hopefully it is shared.

Re: Renaming files
Renaming makes no difference at all to sharing the file. eMule uses the filehash (the |836422A5828D1668DE704BB52147E7BF| part of of the ed2k link) to locate files. If you rename it using eMule by pressing F2 (or rightclick Rename) on the shared file, eMule doesn't even need to take time to rehash it.
If you rename outside of eMule, or move it to a new directory, you need to press 'Reload' to get eMule to recognize the file.
If I need to rename a file I rename the beginning (like in your example) but leave the ripper's tag intact at the end of the filename. The file listing isn't as tidy but is to me more informative (remembering which version of the file I grabbed). I usually drop a sitename (these are added automatically even if the file is taken from another site) and category descriptions at the beginning of of the filename.
The file will show up differently in eMule search but as long as the movie name is correct no problem really. The many languages at FLM cause a different twist. You will find that some people like to leave the file as originally named, some like to rename it to the English equivalent title (as given by IMDB). I sometimes add the English title as an AKA but leave the original. Makes finding a file for reshare easier.

Re: Renaming files
I've only been using eMule about 3 weeks. I used to download movies from newsgroups, especially alt.binaries.movies.thelostmovies, but since Verizon cut all binary newsgroups awhile back, I've been jones-ing for new (to me) FL movies. I've only deleted (I think) one movie I downloaded via eMule, mainly because it was very boring and mostly off-topic, but the rest will stay on the HDD for awhile and I'll reshare if I can. Everything I might have that's on-topic has already been shared here. I went through every movie I have, but no luck.
Needless to say - No, it's NEEDFUL to say - I appreciate the efforts everyone has made here. Aside from the obvious on-topic stuff, many/most of these films are non-USA and are WAY better than the Hollywood dreck. I'd never have the opportunity to see these without you all, so THANK YOU!
