Nine-year-old Mathilde (Louisa Pili) has lived alone with her mother, Helene (Sandrine Bonnaire), since her parents got divorced and her grandfather had a heart operation.
Mathilde's bad grades cause a lot of friction between herself and her mother. She often hides under her bed where she's created her own world full of mysteries. One night, Mathilde runs away to the nursing home where her grandfather, Paul (Claude Rich), is recovering. In her hands, she has a letter from Madeleine, her grandmother, who disappeared thirty years before. Mathilde has worked out that her family has been lying to her; her grandmother isn't dead. She's come to get Paul so that he can help her find Madeleine. They take the dawn train for Biarritz...
Helene is upset to find dozens of letters from her mother among Mathilde's things and to discover that her father has been hiding what he knows from her. She heads to the south west of France in her car...

A journey toward truth thus begins for Paul, Mathilde and Helene. Screens collapse, secrets and lies fade. Thanks to Mathilde's strength and sense of purpose, the trio will at last be able to speak honestly with each other.

Year: 2004
Original title: Le cou de la girafe
Runtime: 1h23
Country: France | belgium

Subtitles: None
Genre: Drama

Ten year old Mathilde (Louisa Pili) lives with her mother Helene (Sandrine Bonnaire) in a suburb of Paris. Her only other family is a telephone dad (living in America with a new partner) and her grandfather Paul (Claude Rich), a retired bookseller, whom she and her mother visit regularly in his nursing home. Unknown to all she has found a cache of letters hidden by her gramps and written by her maternal grandmother Madeleine (Monique Mélinand) to Helene (and one to herself - the only one she's opened). Paul has taken bitter revenge on his wife for having left him, with his best friend, when Helene was ten; but he has deceived and embittered his own daughter in the process. As a result Helene hates her mother. Mathilde becomes a catalyst to put things right. She leaves home in the dead of night, walks to her gramps' and confronts him re the letters. He agrees to try to find his ex-wife and they head for the address on the letter sent when Mathilde was born. (His absence in the nursing home and the borrowing of the mini-bus is comically covered for by his friend Leo (Darry Cowl) who elicits the help of other inmates.) Meanwhile Helene, having discovered Mathilde's absence, sets off after them when she finally learns what has happened. Her anger and resentment now focuses on her father who, when they meet up at last, returns to Paris. Helene, having her mother's address from the last letter she wrote, takes Mathilde to a hilltop village in Spain where they find more and less than they would have hoped for. Meanwhile Paul, having buried his demons via the road trip and search, quits the nursing home and resumes a meaningful life in his bookshop.

Oh, I saw this one a long ago... Very nice one, btw. Jean Rochefort is a very famous actor here, and a horseback riding lover : during Athens Olympic Games, he was a permanent guest on every horse event to comment on it. OK, this brings nothing to our main concern, but I think he is not very well-known abroad...
Anyway, very nice eyes and very nice acting for this little girl, who sadly did nothing else after that... Her eyes remind me of Alba-Gaia Kraghede-Bellugi, who did some nice OT movies, too... (see La Robe du Soir, and Je m'appelle Elisabeth)

i noticed that she seems to have aged a year from Rich's synopsis to mine,it's a shame they couldn't include subs on the dvd, hopefully some will turn up.
