Simple. The Usenet, or mostly called "news", is a news messages archive. Binaries are only a subterm of it. But they make the big part of data. To access the Usenet you need a newsreader and a login. There are free servers, but very slow, often offline and not very "full".
I guess, you mostly want to use binaries, so it's also a good advice to get a binaries newsreader like BNR. It's optimized to suck the binaries out of the Usenet.
By the way, the Usenet may be a faster source for movies and other stuff than eMule, but you can't search it. It's also not as full of movies like the EDonkey net. Just think of the capacity the combined hard drives of about 2 million users at eMule have!
