Understanding the mule
Understanding the mule
Hello,
I would just like to ask the average speed of a download in emule; I don’t have problem waiting, but I’d like to be sure I don’t do anything wrong. Since the last 15 hours, I have managed to download 2MB so, according to my calculations, with this pace my download (1.4GB) will take about 14 months, i.e. next year around July, if I keep my computer on till then non-stop.
I think then it would be reasonable to suspect that I am doing something terribly wrong, and ask for tips on improving the speed.
I would also like to know whether emule is generally regarded as user-friendly software. In my case, I think it might take some time to get the grasp of it.
Thank you in advance!

Re: Understanding the mule
Post some more information.
What system are you on? PC?
How many downloads are going on, just one?
Do you have port forwarding on your router?
Do you have a Low or Hi ID?
Are you connected to KAD?

Re: Understanding the mule
Hello,
Thanks for the reply; I will try to answer what I know:
1. What system are you on? PC?
Yes, PC
2. How many downloads are going on, just one?
With emule, just one. But I am also downloading some rapidshare files.
3. Do you have port forwarding on your router?
I think not
4. Do you have a Low or Hi ID?
I don't know
5. Are you connected to KAD?
Just checked: no. Nevertheless, I did connect when I started the download (?). In any case, I reconnected again, yet did notice any changes.

Re: Understanding the mule
I'm going to assume you are trying to download 'Hideaways' & MAY be in my queue but it would help to be sure. I would strongly suggest changing your eMule username to something identifiable.......ie your FLM username with preferably the [FLM] tag. If me & others can actually find you we can help identify your problem.

Re: Understanding the mule
Yes, the assumption is correct; it is Hideaways.
I don't recall being asked for a username while installing emule, so I'm not sure how to change it. I do not wish to bother you with every single detail though, so I'll try to orientate a bit myself and see if I can do right and change username.
Basically, what I did so far, was to download emule, install it accepting the settings as they were, not interfering with anything, and then clicking on the hideaways link you provided...

Re: Understanding the mule
OK!
This is important to know bergman;
eMule is like the diesel engine of downloaders. It all starts slowly. I have 16 simultanuous downloads going on,
therefore also filling my 'shared' folder, yet still only downloading at 10.9 kbps. Therefore, for some files
(depending on how many peers share it) might take a week or so to download.
For downloading just 1 file, eMule is VERY slow. The idea is, you download several (or a lot of) files, leave it on,
go do something else while it's running in the background. There is no instant gratification!
eMule therefore, is very neat for downloading rare files, ones you don't find elsewhere.
Like loverboy says. If we see your username in our uploads list, we give you a friends slot.
That might speed things up a little.
Also, the more popular a file is, the more folks share it, the quicker the download. if there are 300 peers
sharing a file, chances are the file downloads within a few hours.
good luck and check the newbie guides on this forum - they can be very helpful.

Re: Understanding the mule
Thanks!
I did change my username to berg-man [FLM] as suggested... so now there's no file downloading anymore, instead I see (under "Transfers") "known clients (5)" including loverboy.
I will look into it a bit more. I don't really mind if it's slow, as long as I have it right and do things correctly.
Again, thanks for the help!

Re: Understanding the mule
So far, you don't mention any uploading. Create a folder, call it "shared" or something like that, fill it with some movies or proggies, go to options>>directories, find your folder in the "shared directories" field and mark it.berg-man wrote:Yes, the assumption is correct; it is Hideaways.

Then go to options>>connection and chose your ul/dl speeds.
Go to KAD, click "connect"
Go to Servers, click "connect". If there ain't any servers in the left field, you have to put in an URL with a server.met in the right field (google it!)
Re: Understanding the mule
Done and done, thanks!
Kad was already connected, and so were 5 servers. Still no sign of a download, though it all vaguely starts to make some distant sense.

Re: Understanding the mule
Unfortunately my ISP has just commenced my daily 7 hour bandwidth throttling so I'll be of no use until midnight UK time. After this I'll attempt to find you & provide a friend slot.
You'll find many here only too happy to help you set-up eMule properly, especially as it looks like you're putting some time & effort in yourself rather than simply requesting crapidshare links like some do. Stick with it.......eMule may not be the fastest file-sharing platform but file longevity is excellent & it spawns forums such as this one to discuss material & critically, request reshares on files that have no sources.
Generally speaking, the eMule default settings work well, certainly until you are a little more comfortable & familiar with how it works. Connectivity is the crucial thing......make sure the globe with arrows in the bottom RH corner is all green.......a yellow or worse still, red arrow indicates a firewall/router problem that needs correcting. Try to make sure your download/upload settings fall within your bandwidth capabilities. You may need to run a speed test & adjust accordingly.
