[REL] Ana (1982) [Portugal]

Comparable to The Tree of Wooden Clogs, this film follows the daily happenings of a poor family with three children (two boys and a girl roughly four to eight years of age) living in rural Portugal.

Often painfully slow yet equally detailed, vignettes focus on anything from the kids at play to cleaning up a broken vase; some poetic text fills in the gaps. Arthouse lovers might appreciate, but others are bound to be bored.

Ana combines straight-on documentary technique with unexpected flights of dreamlike surrealism. The title character, played by Ana Maria Martins Guerra, is a young Portuguese girl who lives with her grandmother. Through their relationship, we are witness to the Cycle of Life: Grandmother takes care of granddaughter until granddaughter is obliged to do same for grandmother. The scenes between the two protagonists are counterpointed with impressionistic camera compositions based upon famous religious paintings. Ana was impressive enough to earn an American art-house release, a rarity for independently produced Portuguese films. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

VHSRip, poor quality but this is quite rare. Portuguese audio, no English subs I know of. There are hardcoded French subs which may help some follow the film if they want to watch the whole thing. Definitely not for everyone, or even most people, though.

Absolutely Amazing!!!

Many thanks FLL; you have been on fire! :onfire

I've been so tempted to rent/buy this film from CVMC over the years but I've held off with the hope that some Avant Garde DVD company would pick this up and release it... :pray

Spoiler:

This is a very slow-moving glimpse into the life of a rural family in Portugal, presumably in the 1970's (you don't see anything modern until late in the film when a man is driving a car - no electricity, no powered farm machinery, etc.). From birth to death, you see how the people in this family live their lives. No excitement, no drama, just very ordinary daily activities. I ended up using 8X to get through it, otherwise I was completely bored. Not a keeper for me.
FLL's prodigious procurement powers provide people a potential plenitude of pleasurable peering.
