I thought the opposite. Old-timers who aren't here anymore could of course receive "likes" too (eg., if somebody was still interested in their ed2k links) and would be thus in competition, but currently active members who are posting fresh stuff would probably get more "likes".

This just means another button to click, nothing more. People should be able to be "like" or "unlike" ANY post, whether it has a download link or not. Also, links to screenshots, RFF and IMDb, and even links to other posts in FLM might have to be "liked" before they're clickable.
Of course people would be able "like" and "unlike" any post. ed2k links would be IMO just a good "bait". Members who post ed2k links would probably get more "likes", so ed2k would automatically be the preferred way of sharing.
