In un quartiere popolare dell'estrema periferia di Roma vive Giampiero, un bambino di tredici anni, buono e ingenuo, che viene burlato dai suoi compagni perché non si separa mai da un atlante geografico che gli permette di sognare grandi viaggi. Quando nella sua classe un giorno arriva Romina, una bambina rom, lui si sente unito a lei dalla comune capacità di evadere con la fantasia. Intanto i genitori di Giampiero, il fruttivendolo Alfredo e l'aspirante pittrice Luciana, si scoprono incompatibili, mentre il terribile padre di Romina perde al gioco con Fulberto, uno zingaro proprietario di un luna park itinerante, ed è costretto a vendergli la figlia. Quando Fulberto va a prendere la bambina per portarla con lui in Puglia, Giampiero che la difende, viene duramente percosso e finisce in ospedale. La gente del quartiere la notte dopo, per ritorsione, dà fuoco all'accampamento rom. Un giorno Giampiero riceve notizie di Romina e va a raggiungerla .....

In a neighborhood of the extreme outskirts of Rome lives Giampiero, a child of thirteen years, good and innocent, who is mocked by his teammates because they never separated from an atlas that allows him to dream big trips. When in his class one day he comes Romina, a Roma girl, he feels united to her by their common ability to fulfill the fantasy. Meanwhile the parents of Giampiero, the greengrocer and the aspiring painter Alfredo Luciana, you discover incompatible, while the terrible father of Romina loses the game with Fulbert, a gypsy owner of a traveling carnival, and is forced to sell his daughter. When Fulbert goes to get the girl to take her with him in Apulia, Giampiero who defends her, was severely beaten and ends up in hospital. The people in the neighborhood the next night, in retaliation, set fire to the camp Roma. One day Giampiero receive news and Romina going to get .....
