The story of the youngest person ever to be declared a saint by the Catholic Church.

There are no spoilers here. The movie begins with a flashforward after the arrest, then goes back to cover the 2 years leading up to the event. Not to mention the fact that her story is over 100 years old. I recommend not watching this movie without a box of tissues handy

Soon after, Maria's father died of malaria leaving her mother to raise six children alone. While the rest of her family worked in the fields, Maria would cook, sew and keep the house clean. It was a hard life, but the family was very close. They shared a deep love and faith for God. Perhaps the highlight of her life was her First Holy Communion, which she dutifully prepared for and awaited with great anticipation.
On July 5, 1902, eleven-year-old Maria was sitting on the outside stairs of her home, sewing one of Alessandro's shirts while he threshed beans in the barnyard. Knowing she would be alone, he returned to the house and threatened her and attempted to rape her. She would not submit, however, protesting that what he wanted to do was a mortal sin and warning him that he would go to hell. When he realized that he could not have his way with her, he stabbed her over a dozen times.
Maria was rushed to the nearest hospital where doctors tried to save her life. She underwent surgery without anesthesia because of the severity of her injuries, but she was beyond the doctors' help. After many hours of suffering during which she expressed forgiveness for Alessandro, Maria died of her injuries.
After serving 30 years in prison, Alessandro visited Maria's still-living mother and begged her for forgiveness. She forgave him, saying that if Maria had been able to forgive him on her deathbed then she could not do less.
On June 24, 1950, Pope Pius XII, standing on the steps of St. Peter's in Rome, pronounced Maria Goretti a Saint and Martyr in front of half a million people, proposing her as the Patroness of Modern Youth. Alessandro attended the canonization ceremony together with Maria's mother. She was the first mother ever to attend the canonization ceremony of her child.

I wish I could have found a better trailer but all the ones available are in a foreign dub. My rip is the original language and the English subtitles, which I got from the dvd but made some improvements on, you won't find anywhere else.
