The story of an old man and his granddaughter, 14-year-old newcomer
Mariam Buturishvili, who live on a temporary island created by spring runoff. The Inguri River (which forms the boundary between Georgia and Abkhazia) creates these islands in early spring and reclaims them in the late summer flood season. Because their soil is so fertile, it's worth the effort to cultivate them for that single growing season.
But this is the early 90's when Abkhaz separatists are fighting for independence from Georgia. Boats filled with troops from both sides pass by on the river, and gunfire rings out periodically in the distance, disturbing the peaceful lives of farmer and granddaughter. One of the sparsest dialgoue films you will ever see. There are probably more words in the opening narrative than are spoken aloud throughout the movie. Mariam is very cute though, and she doesn't leave much to the imagination.
The 720p version posted earlier is not true HD but an upscaled DVD rip. I've put up the original disc; it has a sharper picture, but double the file size (if that's a factor for you).
