This morning I watched this movie for the first time.
It is a candy for the eye and a little gem, but sad with a claustrophobic impression later. I loved Mérette immediately and hoped until the end she would withstand the violent protestantic régime at her home. Fuck Jesus!
There are no subs available, but the DVD is worth to be viewed. It contains an interview with the little actress and the director and a making-of and is available at cede.de for 21 EUR. According to the text on the DVD-cover it has been remastered in HD, but the BluRay is still not in stock.

I will create subtitles later.

Best regards

Et voilà! 8-)

Here is the subtitle file for "Mérette" in german. Sorry, I have not had the time to make another translation in english.
It will follow later if you want.

It was a hard piece of work, some lines might not be perfectly translated, when the sound was not clear in some cases.
The story of Mérette is sad and I did a little research after reading in the opening credits, that the story is from a work of Gottfried Keller, a writer in Swizerland and native german Speaker of the late 19th century. His story "Das Hexenkind" (The Wich Child) is a small part of his main work "Der grüne Heinrich" (The Green Henry) where the tale of the 7 year old girl Meret covers a few pages. In this tale Meret died in 1713 at the age of 7 after suffering some months from the bad treatment she got in the house of a protestant reverend. The tale is written in a very old-fashioned style and not easy to read even for nativ german speakers.
The movie plays in the mid-19th century and has some differences to the tale of Gottfried Keller, but follows mainly to the content.
The story of Meret is one of the better known parts of the massive opus "Der Grüne Heinrich" and has been rewritten in the late 20th century in modern german language. The movie is appearantly based on this newer text.
For any further research just ask auntie Google for "Gottfried Keller Hexenkind".

Best regards
Sakura

None that I am aware of, it should exist because it is such a great movie, although a sad story.

Jex, you could take the subtitle file above and use Google Translate. It won't be perfect, but better than nothing.

11-year-old Anne Bos stars in this story of a little girl who's become an unbeliever and can't hide it, in a society that won't accept such a thing. Her father sends her to a strict religious school, where they try their best to re-educate her. She seeks refuge in the natural world and friendship with an older boy who works there.

I recently got the remastered DVD (a big improvement) and created some English subs for it. So here it is, in all its glory!

Edit (Dec. 12, 2024): I added better subtitles in English and included a set in the original French. My own subs contained a number of mistakes and I always intended to do this, but forgot. If you don't feel like downloading the .iso all over again and know how to remux subtitles yourself you can just grab the two .srt files below.

Here are direct links for those who prefer that method or can't use eMule for whatever reason. All I ask is that if you're able to use eMule, please move the file to your shared folder and seed for a while. Every source helps.
