I downloaded this "documentary" (it's rather an interview) two and a half years earlier and stumbled over it on my hd yesterday. I prefered the writing "Berenice e você" as given in the video itself to the more common "Berenice & Você" that you find nearly everywhere else.

Something I knew about South American aborigines are not completely isolated, they often always go to civilizations (white-man villages), they have changed their customs like wearing clothes and it is something that changes them and loses their essence as an autonomous tribe.

Nothing has yet to pass the Kwaio documentary, maybe I should invite the Deutsch family 'In the hidden' to visit Brazil and also make a documentary

I'm inclined to think it's good when they make their way into civilisation out of free will and curiosity (though probably with wrong conceptions). If their culture is preserved and they are protected they are treated like wild animals in a reservation. Good social workers that guide them on their way were probably more helpful than idealistic ethnologist and bureaucrats that try to keep them the way they are. After all our ancestors learned higher culture from more civilized people, too. Though the abyss between the cultures wasn't so broad of course, the loss of much of their own cultural identity was the same (e.g. in the time of the christianisation of Northern and Eastern Europe around 900/1000 AD). In the end the gain was bigger than the loss ...

I agree, Warg. Keeping their culture alive is important, but forcing them to stay primitive is cruel because their lifespan is lower and infant mortality is higher without advanced medical care. The important thing is it must be by their choice and pace, not forced on them, and they may need help to keep from being exploited, not only by other people but by governments.

This show felt really fake. Berenice reminded me of the neighborhood busybody who gushes over the "poor ignorant natives" and the tribal woman was pretty fake too. The white woman tries to portray the natives as she thinks they are and they try to portray themselves the way they think she expects. [REL] Nomads of the Rainforest (1984) is more realistic in every way.

And this IS probably very much their social reality now, since they are already in a stage of adapting parts of modern civilisation. You can't compare this intermediate stage with the live of isolated groups.

That We'e'ena Miguel is president of the "Indigenous Women of Brazil" smells fishy of course. It's the notorious leftist mix of, really or just claimed, under represented groups - in this case: women + ethnical minority . But look into our own social history, nearly all early protagonist of socialism were of bourgeois descent. You hardly find any worker among them because they were too badly educated - so the ideas came from the outside and were only adapted by the working class. It even resulted in a big idealisation of labour around 1900 (in art for example) but without much real improvement. Here it's probably the same ...
