[REL] La Ciociara (1960)

La Ciociara AKA Two Women AKA Paysanne aux pieds nus (1961)

This was a prize-winning role for Sophia Loren - although it was a foreign-language film, she received the Oscar for Best Actress, as well as similar awards from Cannes and the British Film Academy. It's a grim story. The time is set in and around the fall of Italy to the Allies. A widow, Loren, and her daughter (Eleanora Brown) flee their home town, San Lorenzo, to escape the Allied bombing, leaving the family grocery business in the hands of her lover (Vallone).

They return to her native village, where she is attracted to a local farmer (Belmondo), but when the pressure of the Allied attack grows greater, the two women leave for Rome, which they believe will be safer. On the way they are attacked and raped …. A study of the loss of innocence, perhaps over-rated - the critical consensus seems to be that de Sica, one of the greatest of all Italian directors, almost - but not quite - succeeded in turning Loren into a professional actress. The story is by Alberto Moravia and de Sica originally cast the magnificent Anna Magnani as the mother (with Loren playing the daughter) but Magnani flatly refused to play Loren's mother ….

Cesira and her 13-year-old daughter, Rosetta, flee from the allied bombs in Rome during the second world war. They travel to the village where Cesira was born. During their journey and in the village, the mother does everything to protect Rosetta. However, on one occasion they both get raped by soldiers hiding in a church. This cruel event is too much for the always powerful fighting Cesira and she suffers from a breakdown. During their stay in the village, a young intellectual, Michele falls in love with Cesira who does not know how to reply to the advances of such a gentleman.
It is likely the movie will not focus on the girl :(

Actualy, it pretty much does :)

She's obviously not a child, but still plays a young girl very well, and she is HOT.

No special scenes but she is always in a skirt and you often get to see some nice leg, and even more leg after she is ravaged :thumbsup

There is a remake from 1989, directed by Dino Risi, featuring Sophia Loren as Cesira. (Oh, wait...) However, it's probably off topic since the actress playing Rosetta is older. Still, for reference, here's a DVD rip of the remake. H.265/HEVC (yes, really), Italian audio, English subtitles.

Many thanks for this upgrade, nota-bene.

I also found this movie on tubi:
https://tubitv.com/movies/100008319/two-women

As of the last update, yt-dlp now works again on tubi, audio and all.

For those who can watch it there, it is 720p, an in English dubbing with optional subs. It has been my experience that I have not often enjoyed dubs, but the one featured here is quite good, great even. I watched the full first 25 minutes of this movie and I was drawn into it. The voice actors did well, especially Cesira, and truly bring out her strength, dignity and pride.

I will probably watch the rest in Italian, just for the heck of it.

Thanks again everyone, for the great films, both classic and silly.

Thank you for sharing the good news, pillowbaker! I did not even finish reading your post but went straight to Terminal to update it first. I think I eventually came up with workarounds to download audio from Tubi but they were a real pain -- and I don't even remember what they were!

Thank you for both movies, nota-bene! Sydney Penny played the too-old-for-FLM Rosetta in the 1989 version and I have recently watched her in some of her actual child roles.
