The country is actually Belgium.
I'll explain what happens. At a dinner party, the shy Charlotte hides under the dinner table. After she's persuaded to sing a song for evrybody, she goes to play with her cousins. A mean cousin tells her that her mother is not actually her real mother, and that Charlotje was bought when her mum couldn't get children of her own. This shocks Charlotte and makes her wonder if her real name actually is Charlotte. At the end the mean cousin apologizes and says it was all a joke.
