I guess everyone has there own way of doing it, but this is my little routine:

Every time a movie completes, I copy the title to notepad and save the notepad in a folder I have named "To Backup".

I will then backup the movies to DVDR as data when I see I have enough titles in notepad to fill the DVD.

I have trained myself to do it this way in order that I never miss backing up a single film, as I too have had to learn the hard way after losing a drive.

I wouldn’t dream of not backing up a single film, especially as some of them here are like gold dust.

all movies/tvseries that i cap/dl are being burned to DVD-R's as soon as i have the complete serie or can fill up a disc with different movies. Same routines followed for Norwegian music, radioplays, audiobooks etc..

I had assumed that since this external drive was a free one and it had two hundred gig of space, I would use it for storage. Didn't realise it could go blewie also. <sigh>

I treat mine just like an internal HD in that I dont use it just as storage-backup, I still backup whats on the external.

The trouble is with external hard drives is that of heat dissipation (it gets hot :) ) this can lead to premature failure. mine has internal fans but as previously stated by others you are only safe when you have more than one back up source
