Turn up the brightness knob on your TV?
You are right, this does have a dark image.
In VLC you can go to Tools / Effects and Filters
( or use Ctrl+E )
go to Video Effects, check the Image adjust box
and then move the Brightness slider.
But honestly, it does not really help much. Sorry.
This age-restricted Youtube video looks like it has been processed with DNR and is MAYBE a little bit brighter:
