AKA Where The Heart Is
From the director of Marius et Jeannette, this story of two working-class families is a fable with an optimist streak. A young black man, Francois, is wrongly accused of rape by a racist policeman. The story is told in voiceover by his childhood friend, neighbor, and the mother of his future child, Clementine, who is white. The city is Marseilles as in the previous film, symbolic with its churches, prisons and ruins. Except in this film, director Robert Guediguian also ventures outside, taking the story to Sarajevo; two different cities, one devastated by war, the other by a bad economy and unemployment. A la Place du coeur won a Special Jury Prize at the 1998 San Sebastian Film Festival and was also shown at the 1998 Toronto Film Festival and the 1998 Montreal Film Festival.

Thank you bloodhound!

I resynced the English subtitles that I found at opensubtitles. I then noticed that the subtitle text included a bizarre COUNT going on that was NOT in the dialog and NOT on the screen: 2,3,4,eleven,fifteen,twenty... I think I managed to remove all the extraneous numbers. Either it was something very pretentious or it was a remnant of the translation process.

I've seen that happen before, usually when there's a slight formatting glitch. Line numbers can become text to translate. Any software that edits subtitles will add missing line numbers back and you're left with these apparently random numbers counting up. I've seen timecodes translated too on occasion, if they're not properly formatted.

Thanks for taking the time to do this. Subtitles are everyone's least favorite task, and the effort is always appreciated!

If I analyze the tasks dispassionately based on how much time I devote to them and what holds my attention enough to keep me awake, then I might just interpret fixing subtitles as my FAVORITE task! Oh yeah, much more entertaining than actually watching a movie. Those bore me so much rhat they routinely put me to sleep. It is only rarely that I notice I have fallen asleep with my fingers resting on the keyboard while working on subtitles, advancing much too far in the task at hand.

I did not notice the strange count until after I had resynced it and done the usual automated SubtitleEdit cleanup fixes. I COULD have grabbed the second, older English opensubtitle and checked ITS text to see if the numbers were not there in that one. But I figured "In for a penny, in for a pound" and was committed to what might not have been the best choice.
