help for newbie with eMule
Re: help for newbie with eMule
I had the same problem with my Modem/Router.
I search the modem manufacturers websight with no luck, then went to the ISP and found the info I was looking for.
My modem was outdated and was not accessible by uPnP or by Port Forwarding software.
I had to go into the modem manually by typing launchmodem into the address of my browser.
It may be another quick access to the modem, but typing your IP address always works.
You then need the info from your ISP to open the TCP and UDP ports on the Modem/Router.
It is the same way to open ports for online games. Again talk to your ISP, if they supplied the modem, they should help.
Note: the port number asked for 3 times on the TCP stays the same.
It will ask for a range but always type the same number. example range 35690-35690.
The UDP will be a different number but will also be a range of, example 45000-45000.
You can pick any numbers you want just make sure they are the same numbers you chose on eMules Option tab, Connection, Client port.
As I said B4 get the info to set your particular modem up from your ISP.
It is acctually a simple process and take less than 5 min.

One of the best way that I think that I could help you is for you to call your ISP and tell them to open a port 4665 4667...

Thanks for all the help from everyone here... I think I have my eMule working quite well now. I still get the Low ID messages when I connect, but the app seems to work reasonably well despite that!

Anyway, having had my little rant, I now ask a question concerning sharing an avi that I have. In my eMule app, under Preferences > General > Files, there are two small boxes - one of them titled "See my share". Do I leave this buttoned at the default "No One" or use "Friends" or "Everyone"?? The other box is "Default Permission" - should I leave this buttoned at the default "Public", or not?
Thanks for everyone's input and help... it's so nice to have such helpful and friendly replies in this Forum.

Re: help for newbie with eMule
I'd leave the "See my share" at No One - if you set it to one of the others, eMule will let people browse everything in the share folder(s) to see if there's something else they might want. That might not be good if you have private files you're only sharing with people you specifically give a link to. For instance, if I had a home movie named "108389283X.AVI", it's unlikely a search will find it, but someone who browses may be intrigued by the name and download it. The "Default Permission" should stay at Public if you want people to be able to download stuff.Guest wrote: Anyway, having had my little rant, I now ask a question concerning sharing an avi that I have. Generally, you should leave most settings at defaults until/unless there's a good reason to change them.

Different culture, I guess. Some of my friends who visited USA were very annoyed by intrusive shopkeepers who started to talk before the customer even asked anything. Since you decided to live in xxxxxxxx by your own choice, you should get adjusted to the local culture...Guest wrote:You can wait in a coffee shop for 15 minutes here before the brain-dead waitresses seem to notice that you are actually a customer!
Anyway, I don't share private home movies via eMule, LOL, but I leave my shared files hidden, because not everyone needs to see my movie collection.

Back in 2007, I got a fine of 6000.- € for copyright violations - better be prepared that not everybody on your "friends list" is really your friend!

Re: help for newbie with eMule
I just wanna say that after a few months I finally got my eMule to get me a High ID and it wasn't easy for a tech n00b like me but this thread did help a lot
PS: There is a HUGE difference in speed. I doubt I'll be going back to torrents now!

I wish you could share your eMule tweaks with me... because even on a recent FLM release, "Agnes Varda", my best download speed is about 16k, as opposed to some movies I access by Torrent - like last night a movie I downloaded through Torrent was flying at 1.2Gb/sec, it was amazing. Because of this I only use eMule for rare or otherwise unavailable films, or tv show episodes.
I still get Low ID messages, despite all the tweaks I have tried - this is a nuisance....

Re: help for newbie with eMule
emule can be just as fast as torrent. difference from torrent is emule you are usually connected to several files and the bandwidth is spread among them. torrent it is easier to direct it all to one file. when i have just the one file i am sharing with emule i can upload as fast as my bandwidth allows. torrents are also more popular than emule. it is common to see several hundred seeds on torrent. as soon as you get an emule file with a lot of sources you might see it can be very fast too. earlier i downloaded "A Menina do Lado" in less than 20 minutes. problem with torrent is when no one is seeding anymore the torrent may die. as long as someone has a file with emule it can be reshared by anyone with that file thus the file will live a long happy life.
if you are getting anything on emule it means you have it working. under the transfers screen look at the bottom right corner. does it say eD2k:connected/Kad connected? next to that the little round icon is it green or is it red or half and half? this may tell us what your next step should be.

Re: help for newbie with eMule
It was all with the Simple Port Forwarding program. Once I got that to work that's all I needed. Don't get me wrong, the fastest I've downloaded something from eMule so far is around 300k/s, so it's still not as fast as the fastest torrents. But it just depends on the number of sources you can connect to.
Maybe if you tried different port numbers? I think 4662 and 4672 were for an older version of eMule, so if you have a more recent version then you probably have to use different numbers. I have 0.50a and I'm using 48809 and 40301. Of course there's a very good chance that I don't know what I'm talking about and what I'm saying is not true.
