Judging by the preview picture posted on that site, it may be the original from which the smaller version was encoded. Compressing a 90+ minute film down to 415 MB is going to cause significant loss of detail all by itself. Or it could be another recording of the same broadcast. Hard to tell. My guess would be that it's old school SD at full original quality. So sharper and better looking, but not HD. I used to capture broadcasts on my satellite DVR using a set top DVD recorder. I encoded an .avi rip of that file to share back in the day, on a different site. It was something like 350 MB and didn't look nearly as good as the original .vob but was okay for its size - I was using dialup at the time so sharing big files was a problem. That's just my take. I can't vouch for the 3.2 GB Sista leken rip - the panes on that preview aren't big enough for comparison. I'd have to download the file and look at it.

Free files don't really exist on file.al. Sometimes tiny ones, like commercials which are 20-30 MB, can be successfully downloaded for free. Much more than that and it's guaranteed to fail. Often it gets close to finishing and then aborts ... like it's taunting you. Because everything is packed in rar files, 95% of a download means you've got nothing. Free mode is a tease. It's window dressing to sucker you in.

I too found the RFF pictures are so small that I can't really tell the quality. Zooming in I can see the station watermark. Anyway, what we have emuling here is what looks like a VHS recording and not a DVR. It has the static and occasional tracking issues. I have never digitized a videotape so I don't know for sure what is a "superior" quality size for that source, but I know traditionally they were ripped to 700Mb or less (CD sized). My suspicion is that there is only so much you can get out of a videotape and that increasing it to DVD5 size will not help.

I may be confusing it with another similar site, but I thought I remembered that it was one of those sites that offered under 1Gb (or under 700Mb?) for free and everything else was Premium. Surprise, surprise, when someone got a larger file and it had the same quality you would expect from 700Mb. I am just as cynical as you are about their game.

It could also be a direct digital capture rather than a VHS Rip. The image in that case would be sharper - although you'd still have those overly dark scenes, which were part of the broadcast. If anybody can download from that stupid host it's probably worth seeing if the big file is any better. I'm not signing up for file.al premium just to find out though, and no one else should either!

I still have the suspicion, that it is just the file from Youtube reencoded to a bigger filesize (the preview looks the same).

I already tried to "rescue" the VHS-Rip, but it's impossible. The picture is just too dark. Black is black. There is no more picture information available, that can be recovered.
