ASS subs are an excuse for childish jokes ala Beavis & Butthead.

Most of the time, SRT subtitles use much simpler formatting.

If you were into anime you'd be very familiar with them, as the Japanese -> English community uses them heavily.

ASS subtitles are far more advanced and can do things you might not think are possible with a text-based subtitle format.
