I do recommend Mariken (2000), which takes place in perhaps the mid 1300s. Maybe earlier time period than requested, but it does touch upon your other request of being lighthearted, and Mariken is no more than 10 or 11 and quite the delight to watch!

I made subs for it, too. All 4 episodes may be watched together as if they were a movie.

if we're talking about earlier than the timeframe requested, i can recommend Lady of Csejte which takes place during the 16th century

Great movie, haven't seen it in like a decade though

I know these are 300 to 500 years BEFORE mgray has requested, but I must thank you Moonee for the Lady of Csejte recommendation. I am grabbing ghost's file now. I had not heard of this one, nor found it during my previous dives into this forum.

And a big thank you to citronleaf for the new (to me!) Kurosawa recommendation. This looks like something I can really delve into.

Thanks I will check out those as well, and Mariken looks great, Pillow.

Although that was my preferred time period, any era where girls dressed up in frilly dresses/bows/ribbons in hair, and that sort, I am cool.

Along similar lines to Swallows and Amazons (and also part of the Swallows and Amazons set of books by Arthur Ransome) is the BBCs adaptations of "Coot Club" and "The Big Six" they were set in the 1930s and filmed around The Norfolk Broads in the UK.

I am overwhelmed by all the great suggestions here! Some I have seen and know very well, some I had forgotten about, some are old FLM threads that deserve revisiting, and most excitingly there are suggested movies and series that do NOT yet have their own threads but clearly deserve it.

Here's a few relevant movies free on youtube, for anyone that doesn't want to/can't download:

Railway Children (2000) - Haven't watched this one yet, so I didn't mention it, but I believe it fits my own parameters: From the Emmy-winning "Masterpiece Classic" series comes this dramatization of E. Nesbit's classic novel about three children whose lives change forever after they move to a Yorkshire cottage near a railway line. https://youtu.be/sKvEWFG01jE

Railway Children Return (2022) - A sequel to Railway Children, haven't watched, but looks good. https://youtu.be/kdsuMNYcw8M

The Secret of Roan Inish (1994) - Fiona (Jeni Courtney) is a young Irish girl with an unusual family history, including a long-missing baby brother. When she goes to live with her grandparents on the west coast of Ireland, Fiona hears stories about her ancestors, tales that involve mythical creatures called selkies who can shift from seal to human form. https://youtu.be/42_XNN0n8nA

Fairytale a true story(1997): Russian dubbed, don't really suggest watching it this way, but maybe if you want to skim it and see if it's something you're interested in. https://youtu.be/JEz9G-wODN8

Secret Garden 1987 made for tv hallmark version: https://youtu.be/8d9NXe5H4C0 Probably the single worst adaptation of this story IMO, but it's the only one I could find on youtube. (i still kind of like it just because this girl comes off as the most unhinged Mary Lennox of any adaptation so it has some unintentional comic value)
