Nope, my source is a 1991 (according to the guy I got it from) TV cap on VHS transferred to DVD, which I am then ripping. So the original quality isn't much to write home about, and given that ghost's capture is already on FLM with decent quality (for a VHS) I want to get this as good as I can.

Whilst I agree with FLL posting his own rip I don't think we need concern ourselves that others may be able to produce something of better quality. Have a look at this thread & better still, download the movie.

FLL & others here will doubtless obtain material with the same obvious defects that I experience. Of course there is some loss of quality with encoding/compression but done carefully it IS minimal........it's not like the degradation of VCR to VCR transfer of years ago. I'm sorry but I refuse to release with black bars, edge picture disturbance, weird aspect ratio, horrible colours & crappy audio on the off-chance someone might be able to make a better job of it.
(even though it may *look* better)
......but isn't that what it's all about?

You misunderstood.

Just because you burn something to a DVD disc doesn't make it a DVD release.

You can burn all sorts of crap to a DVD, but crap remains crap. The source must be mastered to DVD, eg. from the film stock. Original DVDs, BluRay, HD-DVD, etc. all qualify as being adequate source material for creating a DVD version. Some DVBs (digital TV broadcasts) also qualify, especially if the telecast is in HD.

Ghost's version, yes. My more-complete-but-lower-quality-and-still-not-completed-ripping version, no.

The fact both ghost and I were able to get this is an indication that yes, it might be out there somewhere
The ioffer link could be the same cut as ghost's, it says it was recorded off the Odyssey channel and so was ghost's.
ghost's version is 01:25:36. My copy also came from ioffer, a check shows the guy I got it from is no longer active there though. Its length (after restoring two short cut scenes <1min from ghost's copy) is 1:45:27. So your second link (2 hours including commercials) is probably cut. Unfortunately, most of the times its been shown on TV it's probably a 2 hour slot and is cut.
I went through and did a detailed comparison of the two versions I have. Some of the cuts in ghost's version were obviously for time reasons and were relatively unimportant scenes. And a few seconds were cut here and there at the beginning and end of scenes, standard TV stuff. But since the Odyssey Channel (which latter became Hallmark) was previously named "The Faith and Values Channel" the bath scene was probably the first to go. And in some ways its important to the story, the beginning of the bonding between the mother and Sooner.
