does anyone else have problems with the subs for this? i've got about 4 versions and they're all out of synch,when i open them to edit, subtitle workshop crashes every time.

They are probably UNICODE. Open them in Notepad, then save as ANSI, and then Subtitle Workshop should be able to open them.

Do you have video preview enabled? That feature is buggy. Try disabling it. Or put the subs and video in different folders.

I run the video in a separate player (MPC or VLC) and pause at the points of interest. Are you trying to create subtitles from scratch? Try SubCreator instead. http://www.radioactivepages.com/subcreator.aspx
I like to simply create blank entries on the first run, to create placeholders for the text which I put in later.
