So, early 2000's analog broadcast recorded on a DVR then backed up to DVD-r then ripped to AVI?
Better still, since people were still using VCRs then: TV broadcast recorded to videotape, then burned on a DVD-r using a VHS-to-DVD recorder, then ripped to AVI. The EIA-608 captions I think would support either of these possibilities. With this kind of source, is it even worth the time to do deinterlacing, for those who know how? It sounds like a down-and-dirty backup to me, and now it seems to be the only source for the movie.
That reminds me, I have a few VHS tapes I still need to back up ...
