Especially if one went to painful lengths to download them... why don't I feel like watching them? But instead, I watch lame US Über-predictable crime shows? There must be something wrong with me....

Nothing wrong with that.
When I am mentally tired I watch TV shows I have seen before and that are in my language (English) so that I do not have to read subtitles and do not have to focus too much on the plot, because I already know it.
