I've been using hide.me for five months now, so could try to answer a few of your questions.

First, I too was able to use Dynamic Port Forwarding successfully. Prior to this setting, I've been stuck on LowID, but I think this fixed it (I can't quite tell in eMule, but the Server list has the Kad network as Open, although it hasn't been connecting to the eD2k network for a while now).

Second, regarding the free version-according to the hide.me website, Dynamic Port Forwarding is only available to Premium users. Also, the free version limits you to 10GB per month. I used the free version in April when I joined before upgrading to Premium, so that limit was in effect back then.

Third, as far as speeds with eMule go, they're all over the place. Sometimes, it gets 1-2MB per second; other times, only 5KB per second. Sometimes, it connects to all sources for a file; other times, it doesn't.

I use Port Forwarding via UPnP with hide.me and it works perfectly with eMule.

If you "can't quite tell": go to the Servers tab in your eMule client. It will say High ID or Low ID in the ed2k network part of the My Info box in the lower right corner. That way you can tell for sure! I don't think you can have HighID unless you connect to the eD2k network. You could try connecting to a server from the same tab.

I finally figured out why eMule wasn't connecting to the eD2K network. For some reason, it lost all servers and I had to reconnect to them updating the server.met. I've never had to do this before, so I don't know how this happened.

Anyway, I finally have HighID, so I can confirm the hide.me VPN works perfectly with eMule.

Oh my goodness! I have to do this at least a couple times a month. Glad you figured it out!
