As for ghost's note with the BR upgrade, I found this bit of info on imdb:

Was edited into a TV-Series with 5 episodes in half-hour format in 1986, using scenes originally deleted to achieve the necessary episode length but also omitting a considerable number of scenes at the beginning (including Johanna's initial narration and introduction of her diary) to allow for the children to embark in the first episode. This resulted in the first DVD release (which used old broadcast tapes as master) accidentally missing the omitted scenes as well.

So perhaps the BR release is closer to the theatrical release, and may possibly contain scenes that the DVD/TV version omitted.

There is also an 11gb version of this film on rutracker. Russian dub. Apparently, even with the size, it does not have the original German audio.

It is also about 79 minutes instead of 84, even though it is 24fps and would be expected to be longer not shorter than a 25fps version. Here and at blizzardkid I encounter 103 minute and 98 minute LONG versions even though both are 25fps, but so far I only see the 98 minute version being available. Whatever downloads complete, I will share links. But right now I am bewildered and am not sure exactly what I am downloading. I am definitely curious about a difference of 14 to 19 minutes of footage!

I often prefer shorter cuts because the long versions can be filled with crap, and I definitely want ghost's (shorter) 1080p regardless. Thanks!

Opensubtitles.org has English subtitles for the 103 minute version, and German subtitles for the 84 minute director's cut. There are corrected English subtitles at the.nextthing.club for the Director's cut. I will post as them as a downloadable attachment after I have verified they are synced with ghost's version. All the links for the direct-download of TNT's 6.5Gb Director's Cut seem to be gone. Reading their discussion of the versions is interesting, although perhaps I am not any more enlightened.
