I call this type of edit "false widescreen" - they take a 4:3 image and chop off the top and bottom of the picture, replacing it with black bars to create the illusion of a widescreen cut. Some made for TV movies are actually filmed in 4:3 aspect. They really should present them that way, instead of butchering them to fit a standard HDTV.
Yes, I hate this, too. The worst example for this is actually 'Pretty Baby'-

Yes, we have the 1080p release from deadman, but I hate it when films get cropped from 4:3 to 16:9.
So I did my own Full HD-version of the original uncropped film:

The girl is cute but other than that, this movie was quite boring (I think I almost fell asleep at one point)
Maybe I'm just not into the selkie kind of stuff but heh
(Also, this movie isn't UK.. It's Ireland but maybe I should stop being too nitpicky)
