.part says to large for notepad or word

part met shows nothing in notepad except loads of boxes

Do not open the .part file, but the .PART.MET

The filename should be in the .part.met file

Try using MetMedic. Might help.

Metfileregenerator should do the trick - not sure where i got it but pretty suree is freeware and works superbly - select option for view not repair
