Re: impersonator on emule
OIC, neo is another version of eMule.
Id rather keep the original eMule and just stop the users copying my name; but who can do that?
I can call myself any name I want, as can other users.
I dont see how downloading a program on my computer can stop some chap on the other side of the world from naming himself Debaser FLM.

Re: impersonator on emule
As idler said: they are using the nick thief-hack. Get yourself an emule Mod with leecher secure and this should not happen again.

Re: impersonator on emule
There's a useful comparison of eMule-compatible programs/mods at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison ... y_software
I like the MorphXT mod, as I've said before, and I see there's a mod of the mod, named Magic Angel, which incorporates anti-leecher. I'll try it when I get a chance.
But I do think in the end there's not much you can really do, since keeping a leecher who has cloned your identity from downloading from you doesn't really solve the problem that the rest of the world sees them and thinks it's you. In general I mark people I know as friends but don't give them upload slots until I see they are willing to upload to you as well as download from you, and if I later see they have downloaded more then 10x what they uploaded I remove the upload slot.
In the short term, I changed my nick back to the eMule default. The nick thief did too (copying me), and is still downloading. The fact that I still see him but in the meantime Debaser saw one pretending to be him makes me think that there's more than one or they are running multiple copies of eMule (another leecher trick).

Re: impersonator on emule
Can a leecher steal someone's credits just by using the same nick? Or is the leecher hoping to profit from a friend slot?
Re: impersonator on emule
No. Credits are based on your userhash. The nick has very little to do with it.
Some mods seem to have this nick-cloning 'feature'. I have a sneaking suspicion that someone who has replied in this thread knows more about it than he's letting on.
The only possible benefit I can think of is with the community shraring feature in clients like eMule Plus which give a 1.5x boost to the score of users who have the desired tag in their nick. Eg. I have set [FLM] as my community tag. If you have [FLM] as the first tag in your nick, I'll give you a 1.5x boost.
Notes:
The tag has to be enclosed in square brackets.
Only the first tag is valid (in [FLM][ARC], [FLM] is valid. in [ARC][FLM], [ARC] is valid).
The tag can be before or after the nick; makes no difference.

Re: impersonator on emule
Look at me, I can change my name to someone else’s!, aren’t I clever.I have a sneaking suspicion that someone who has replied in this thread knows more about it than he's letting on
Screw changing eMule to a different mod because some freak likes my name; lol how can that solve the problem of name changing??
Right, now back to the business of downloading
Re: impersonator on emule
But that's irrelevant when it comes to cloning nicks, because they could achieve the same end by simply changing their name to "Me [FLM]". I seems more likely to me that they are hoping people here add them as friends and give them a boost that way. It could be more sinister if they try to message anyone here in eMule using the cloned nick, but that doesn't seem to be happening.emuler wrote:The only possible benefit I can think of is with the community shraring feature in clients like eMule Plus which give a 1.5x boost to the score of users who have the desired tag in their nick.
