I honestly think it holds up, if you're not looking for deep cinema and can appreciate a movie that did a lot with its budget and the obvious care and dedication that went into all the practical fx and amazing sets(particularly mombi's palace.) and if it's a thing someone cares about, it also has a more age approrpraite Dorothy. It is, obviously, a children's movie, there's no disputing that, so I do understand that's deal breaker for some.
This and Jan Švankmajer's 1988 Alice are my two favorite film versions of those respective stories.
