Synopsis from Wikipedia:

In Halfaouine, a Tunis neighbourhood, young Noura, finely acted by the director's nephew, is divided between several worlds: that of men in the streets, the women with whom he can still share the hammam (Turkish bath) despite his puberty approaching, and his imagination in which he fears the transition to adult life. Boughedir paints a happy picture of Tunisian life, and illustrates the subtle and complex relationships between men and women in Tunisia.

The boy discovers the pleasures of life as his family adopts a teen girl. The boy tries whenever he has a chance to see her unclothed body. After three or four attempts the boy succeeds.

13 year old Selim Boughedir, son of the movie's director Férid Boughedir, plays Noura, a kid who's just reached that age when the opposite sex is on his mind ... pretty much nonstop. He's quite the little player. Hanging out with all the women, some of whom are aware of (and amused by) his obvious interest. Then 16 year old Leila gets taken in by his family and it seems like Noura might finally have a shot.

All the women in the bath house came from the neighborhood where the director grew up and had no prior acting experience. They were just regular women, not professionals. Leila was played by Carolyn Chelby, a 19 yo novice actress also from the area where filming took place. She had only one other role: a short film 20 years later. Despite being past FLM retirement age she is an absolute hottie. I love those sly little grins she gives young Noura. Especially at the end.

Tunisia isn't run by militant ayatollahs but it's still a Muslim country, more conservative than either Europe or the United States. All the nudity surprised me a bit. So did the implication near the end - to even suggest such a thing would seem to invite controversy in that part of the world. Shame!!!
