Not wishing to be a witless ingrate, but if everything here so far originates from the YouTube clips then the source quality isn't great. I'll be needing to get the thumbscrews on FLL to persuade him to release his VHS rip!

I really don't care about the size so much as I detest Windows Media in all its forms. I converted it for my own library, but I'm making it available to anyone else who wants it.

i tried 2 or 3 different formats and always ended up with a massive file.i dont particularly like .wmvs much but it does offer quite a small file size without sacrificing quality.my avi file ended up 1.8 gigs and my mp4 attempt was 1.6 gigs.i dont know enough about codecs to confidently change too many settings.
i didn't know you could convert with vlc player, thats interesting

In this case, the quality difference (if any) between the .wmv and the .avi isn't very noticeable, probably because the original isn't top-notch to begin with (and that's no reflection on starfish's rip, that's just the way it is). I tried two different versions of FormatFactory and a home-brew converter. The resultant video was OK but the audio wasn't synced. VLC's conversion is basically streaming to a file, so it's almost wysiwyg. File size is comparable to a straight .avi rip. I left most VLC settings at defaults, didn't try to clean up or fix anything, conversion was fairly quick, results were acceptable (to me) - though if someone fixes up a DVD-quality version, I'll jump on it.

starfish should correct me if I am wrong, but I can't believe that's his rip, looks to me like he converted (and maybe joined) a previously encoded source.

I noticed one little jump, probably at a join, but hey, I'm
not complaining. I just finished watching it for the first time in at least 20 years and it choked me up as much this time too. When Anh speaks Brian's name...

For future reference, here's something that might work for you also -- to combine youtube clips, I save them from youtube as mp4 and use avidemux to combine them.
http://www.avidemux.org/
Avidemux can usually combine the clips without significantly reencoding them -- no loss of quality, no bloated size. I have a copy of this movie from youtube which has a slightly higher resolution (might be the same youtube clips which your join/reencode changed) and 9 parts takes 253MB, and if I joined them the resulting mp4 would be about that size, which is much more representative of the quality.
