It's been a while since I really investigated this, but my interpretation is that people doing that aren't actually adopting your name... the mod they are using simply looks at everyone's name and repeats it back to them. So noone else sees the fake you as you, they see them as themselves.

As best I can figure the nickthief does this in hopes you have a tag (e.g. "[FLM]") which when repeated back to you gets them better upload speeds. The random changing tags some mods have (e.g "[Kq]") are an attempt to defeat this, if the other user has that particular tag they are obviously a nickthief.

i also check how much has been uploaded or downloaded from this person. just today i saw popdrome downloading a file from me with very little downloaded yet last night i saw the same nick with only a few mb. left? so either popdrome deleted the file and started over or some else was perpetrating. checking that several gigs were shared between us i can be sure it was the real popdrome today. i think?

i too have seen my nick come up several times in the past. it is very flattering.

LOL! Yes it was me! Last night the mule crashed my system. Some file downloads were corrupted, had to start all over.

Yes, very much so! Despite my adding the IP filter, he's back again (with the same IP - not sure what I did wrong, or if there's some work around he's using). This is VERY much appreciated. Thanks, star!
