Thanks for the info, deadman. Honestly, I didn't really know what to say while comparing them. Often, a decent full DVD or good dvdrip is better than an old upscale, but I don't want to downplay upscaling efforts. In this case, I might agree the original dvdrip is preferable, but the small upscales are passable.

Is anyone interested in extracting the automated German subtitles from youtube? Jdownloader is not allowing me to load it up without logging in, a process I am still figuring out.

After doing a little looking around, I found a couple of uloz links claiming to be 720p, both around 1gb in size. They are possibly upscales. I downloaded and inspected them both this time, and they both actually look pretty good, though I have not yet downloaded deadman's file to compare. Based on the screenshots, it is unlikely to be much higher quality than deadman's 700x476 file of 1.38gb.

They're denoised upscales of the 700x476 source. Denoising has reduced image detail a bit, giving you a slightly fuzzier image. Also the aspect ratio (which I believe is correct in the original file) is a little off, wider than it should be.

Truth. Also, much of the reliable old software was given default settings that may have been more applicable back in the early DVD (and specifically NTSC) era. For example, it was not until recently that it was pointed out to me here that Handbrake defaults to 30fps. I have begun using it again, but it annoys me that I have to set the FPS rather than have it default to "same as source"! The same issue surely exists in video encoders for aspect ratio ("What's that?" says the casual movie viewer), which must be set properly too.

I am sorry but I tried and failed too. All my old methods aren't working. I don't know exactly why you would want Youtube automated subs, because they are so terrible, but that doesn't really matter. 9xbuddy normally extracts age-restricted YouTube content without logging in, but this time it did not work for me. Another such site only gave me the video, with subtitles not even an option. Logging in to YouTube and trying Developer Tools, I could not find the automated captions.

Now those MFers require a login to even SEE a help page!!!! I used to have to refer to this page every time the cookies expired, because I could not remember how I did it the last time. I did not even HAVE a login for anything jdownloader. I registered last night, but my account was sent to the Moderators for approval. I have not checked the site again to see if I am now allowed to see their precious help pages. More and more Jdownloader is converting to a for-profit enterprise, and if they can not get your money then they are mining your data.

As long as they are not for an age-restricted video, yes no problem. I believe at one time there was a way to have yt-download and yt-dlp to essentially login to YouTube to get the age-restricted videos (and subtitle, if wanted), but either it stopped working or I could not figure it out!

There are sites that download the age-restricted videos without any login for sure, but THIS time I was trying to retrieve one of those automatically generated live subtites, not one of the preset "real" subtitles. Whether it was the "live" nature of the subs or the site was no longer working right, I don't know. I generally do not bother with autocaptions anymore because they are so bad. I can load them in the YouTube transcription popup, but that only gives the start time of the subtitle and not the end. (This is better than nothing.)

In fact, I came back here because I now have my jdownoader login approved by the moderators and I was allowed to see the damn help page, so now I needed to find the name of "that movie" that I had tried to get the autosubs for in the first place!

The videos are crap 360p, but I know you were specifically after the captions, pillowbaker. I named the subtitles with a .Sponge and a .anderledes, after the names of the YouTube uploaders, in order to clearly distinguish them.

Later I will post in an appropriate technical thread how I downloaded them. It is not too hard, but I just can't remember the steps when the cookies expire, so I need to see the instructional page when I do it. Getting a jdownloader login to be able to see that help page was the hard part!

Well Night, despite the status of the subs, I thank you heartily for extracting these and figuring out what the hell jdownloader wants us to do with the damn cookie submission thing. Oh you're definitely right about about the auto-gen subs here. Oh boy these are bad. I hope this didn't take too much time. I owe ya one for this.

I did have limited success using yt-dlp as goku suggested, using --write-auto-subs, but they churned out auto-gen subs that were already auto-translated into some incongruous, squooshy English. Also, perhaps the corporate at YT are becoming more wise to yt-dlp, as mine lists a notice during download, suggesting something like "phantom" something plugin to help avoid throttling. And the video was downloading at 40kB/s. Didn't want the video anyways, just the frankensubs.

The thing I've noticed about auto-gen subs on yt is that they're actually quite accurate with narration, whether the narration is a youtuber speaking directly to the camera via microphone, or if the narration is a part of exposition of a film, then the sub generator picks things up fairly well. In English anyways. Sadly, it struggles, and likely will for quite some time, with where to insert punctuation, leading to sentences running onwards to the end of the speaking.

I have heard that SubtitleEdit has an auto-gen sub feature, I'll have to explore this option, if it does indeed exist.

I've had good luck with Hatschipuh, where the beginning of the film has narration explaining the existence of magical creatures. Once you get to even basic dialogue, it breaks down to mush and gibberish, occasionally picking up sensible phrases, and then missing out on clear German dialogue even I can easily understand ["Opa, Frühstück, komm!"].

I hope this didn't take too much time.

The only thing that took time was logging in to the jdownloader site. Now I find myself continually accessing that Help page without problems and without logging in. I am totally bewildered why it was demanding it before. I understand that a site wants people to login to POST something, but I only wanted to read the result of a Google search.

With the instructions I had read before in front of me, I can quickly fly through the necessary steps. That is the REAL reason I made the thread here at FLM. If I want to download some age-restricted video, it is probably an FLM-type film so I am also probably logged in to FLM at the time. The information is right here for me to readily access. I don't have to search my bookmarks or my private documents or dig up a jdownloader password I almost never use.

I owe ya one for this.

Sometime in the future you can post an English translation of a German film that ghost has not already taken care of. You have done it before, so that works for me as "payment".

Now that I think about it, I realize you are right! With a single talking head, there is a fairly accurate, stream-of-consciousness unpunctuated dialog. At least for English, I can't judge the accuracy of other languages. The timing it generates is terrible, but if the words are right then it is at least a good start for translation. The problem comes when there is more than one speaker, as it overlaps their dialog.

There are one or two members who have posted extensively about their speech-to-text experiences, and one or two more who also use the software and post the results. I found it absolutely fascinating to read, although probably beyond my abilities and patience. And I believe that the GOOD software is not free, and I am a cheap b@5+@rd. But I do enjoy their results!
