Documentation: Heimweh - Kindheit zwischen den Fronten (Denmark / English & French Subs)
Fighting has been going on in eastern Ukraine since 2014. And this has had terrible consequences, especially for the children there. In the children's home "Priyut", near the front line to the separatist areas, children from broken families find refuge and security for a while.
Fighting has been going on in eastern Ukraine since 2014. This has had dire consequences for the people and especially for the children there. At the Priyut children's home near the front line to the separatist areas, children from broken families find refuge and security for a while - because a group of dedicated educators work tirelessly on their behalf.
The home in the Luhansk region accommodates around 40 children between the ages of 3 and 15. They are housed here while authorities decide their future fate. However, after nine months they have to leave again - to other homes, back to their families. Often the time is too short to heal the traumas and make them strong for the harsh reality outside.
But even in this oppressive world, there are resources that seem inexhaustible: smiles, hugs and care. Margarita and her team have succeeded in creating a magical place in a contested region.
After the Russian attack on Ukraine in February 2022, the children's home was evacuated: Some of the children found new homes in Lviv, others in Vienna. There they are now trying to come to terms with the new trauma of the bombing.
The documentary film makes clear how families and children suffer from the years of fighting in the Donbass region.
"Homesick - Childhood between the Fronts" is a story about restless souls and what one does when one has lost everything. But also a story about how to find faith in life again, and a tribute to the people who put their whole heart into helping others.

Docu-Movie: Meine Stimme für die Ukraine (Switzerland / German lang. and German subs, OV & French lang. with french Subs)
The documentary by Russian-born director Elena Hazanov follows the first steps of Ukrainian women and children in Swiss exile, who had to leave their fathers, brothers, husbands behind. Elena herself came to Switzerland as a political refugee at the age of twelve. She draws a parallel between the situation today and her own exile experiences.
Their names are Larissa and her daughter Sofia (13 years old), Natalya and her daughter Polina (6 years old) and Zoriana with her small children Ilya and Julia (6 and 9 years old). They are picked up by a Swiss aid organization at the Polish-Russian border and driven to Lake Geneva. Dimitri and Alex, two brothers, organize these humanitarian convoys. Neither had any ties to Ukraine before Putin's war of aggression.
They belong to a circle of Swiss host families who take in refugees in their homes. The border, the separations, the journey and the arrival in Switzerland. The meeting with the host families, the orientation in a house you don't know, but where everything reminds you of what you left, until the children start school: the exile lasts longer than all the refugees had expected. And on top of everything else, there is the immense language barrier.
The narrative of the documentary primarily follows these mothers and their children. Years ago, when director Elena Hazanov fled the USSR as a political refugee with her family, she was more or less their age. Children perceive reality in a very different way than adults. Their perspective is the focus of the film.
