Oh yeah, Isabella. The dreaded Isabella. Gotta be careful with imaginary friends in the TNG universe!

Clara was such a sweet, thoughtful, sensitive, and well-behaved young girl that it made perfect psychological sense that her "imaginary friend" would seem to be hard, selfish, malevolent, and dangerous. A perfect setup for the adults to think that Isabella was Mr. Hyde to Clara's Dr. Jekyll.

Of course she was nowhere near as dangerous as when the adults wasted time playing in a holosuite like overgrown children.

I don't think it's that scary, in fact what's really scary is suspicion, misunderstanding, hostility, stereotyping and lack of communication...
Let's quote Captain Picard's lines:
I understand.
You are seeing this ship, all of us from a unique perspective, from a child's point of view.
It must seem terribly unfair and restrictive to you.
As adults, we don't always stop to consider how everything we say and do shapes the impressions of young people.

I totally agree that children's play and thinking can sometimes surprise adults or seem scary, but most of the time it's a far cry from the "childish" behavior and play and cost of adults. Some adults even play with the real world as a holographic room...

Thanks again for uploading the episode, I really enjoyed this one.

In fairness to the humans, she was willing and capable of destroying the Enterprise and had to be talked out of it by "the adult in the room". Picard was simply clever enough to realize that he did not have the power to stop her by force even if that was what he wanted.

Writer-producer Brannon Braga on "Bad Seed" Isabella -
Spoiler:

Braga recalled, "It wasn't quite working in its original guise and Jeri Taylor and Peter Fields and I broke the story and tried to make the imaginary friend more of a bad seed. Before, it was more like Puff the Magic Dragon and it was that the alien was simply curious and didn't have an evil intent. It just kind of laid there and was playful fluff. We decided to make the alien malevolent, where it's mean to the kid." (Captains' Logs: The Unauthorized Complete Trek Voyages, p. 245)
Brannon Braga particularly liked this episode because it involved children:
Spoiler:

"I've taken to calling it Romper Room: The Next Generation. Kid stories appeal by their very nature. There's an innocence to kids and kids can have conflict. The funny thing about kid shows in the Star Trek universe is you can get conflict with kids because they're not developed yet like our perfect adults. In a strange kind of way, kids can have more problems and conflict than our regulars. They can still be imperfect. It is a fun episode and hopefully people won't be so sick of seeing children on the show." (Captains' Logs: The Unauthorized Complete Trek Voyages, p. 245)
Holosuites
Spoiler:

Since I mentioned them: I have my own annoyance at all the holosuite-centered episodes with the adults at play, as if Star Trek was not already make-believe and they had to add another layer of it. (Note to non-Trekkies: holosuite, a recreation room built around a completely realistic artificial reality. Like most advances in such technology, it had its origins in pornographic fantasy and entertainment. And like Las Vegas "Sin City" being taken over by Disney, ultimately it became more family-friendly.) I thought these people had WORK they needed to do! Outside of the holosuite, they even have the time available to mount full Shakespeare productions and put on accomplished music performances. I guess the future no longer needs professional actors and musicians, because even senior bridge officers dedicated to exploring the galaxy manage to do that too.

Why does everything sound cunning and profitable? It seems to me they just have a deeper understanding through communication, as well as an extra level of respect and friendliness.

I watched that episode and it wasn't bad, but I was confused by this comment.
