It looks very clean (to clean for my taste). What's wrong with the original? It's film grain and not too much of it.

It's not as grainy as HUD, which has really inconsistent grain, is that why you did grain removal on that?
I'd say in the original there's a lot more there than I'd want. But yeah, it's all personal taste. I think there's grain that hides detail and is distracting - and in this film there's a lot of really grainy scenes. At 576/625p this fine grain would be smeared out in the mpeg encoding - so it would never be an issue - but at bluray resolution this has far more than most 1080p's of that era and before - so could do with some cleanup imho.
I know when remastering for bluray most film companies will remove strong grain like this. Look at things like Ep4 Star Wars - Lowry Digital colour corrected and did noise reduction. Topaz gives us some tools to do this at the amateur level.
