Great. If you put the files in a RAR and password protect it, then release it with a meaningless name, only the members of this site will find the files and have access to the password.

Thanks OrionPax!! and dubeldarr!

i'm not sure exactly how this is going to work since i don't yet know the format of the backup, will get the files soon hopefully

i've given this some thought i'm willing to set up a new forum with a new host, at a different internet location. hopefully using the back-up files, however i'm also going to also create a text file of the first rel/req post on each thread, that can easily be posted again on a new forum.

the back-up from Orion is important, so i suggest members get a copy!

anyway, the bottom line is, once i've set up the new forum using any/all the back-ups i'll transfer from administrator status, and also i still need someone to step forward who is willing to pay the host.

many hosts offer to create a forum for their customers, can anyone reccommend one??

thanks!!

Rich, I'll tell you what I'm gonna do:

1. Write a quick app to extract all the posts from the files into a temporary Access DB
Everything like poster, date/time, forum and post number will all be retained.
2. This info will then be dumped into a proper phpBB Access DB
3. This Access DB will then be converted to MySQL.
4. The MySQL backend will be archived ready to roll into a fresh install of phpBB (v2.0.17)
5. Instant FLM

Few things to note:

I neglected to take care of the multi page topics  this will be rectified.

Random passwords will be set for users on the new forum, I think one solution is to PM them here before the change over.
