Does anyone know if there are plans to make the two sequels that will complete the trilogy? This one kind of leaves the viewer hanging.

No, unfortunately, for the money it failed miserably. There were plans to release the trilogy.
When it came out word was it was too complicated for kids and lots of bad word of mouth from the religious due to the books anti - God theme.
I loved it.
Same happened with Lemony Snickets and Avatar

I doubt that the religious aspect had much to do with the poor reception.
Personally, I found that the movie just didn't live up to the book.
I encourage you to read the trilogy and find out what happens next!
Same with avatar and Lemony Snicket. Especially Avatar, the last airbender. The original cartoon series is way, way, wayyy better then the movie. Go compare their IMDB ratings if you don't believe me.

I watched this movie for the first time the other day and I really enjoyed it up until it ended on a cliffhanger
Is there a reason why we never got a sequel movie?
Btw, Dakota Blue Richards did an amazing job as Lyra

IMDB TRIVIA:
Years after the film's release, director Chris Weitz revealed that despite him being a fan of the books, making the movie was a "terrible experience" for him because New Line Cinema constantly interfered. Weitz's original script had a much slower pace, allowing for more world-building, character development, and exposition. The studio forced him to scrap elements that weren't immediately essential to the plot and tone down the religious subtext. They also overruled several casting decisions and took over editing to get the running time under two hours, which necessitated re-shoots and the re-arranging of several other scenes to make the film coherent again. The most radical intervention was removing the original downbeat ending from the final cut, intending to use it as the opening of a proposed sequel (which never happened).
George R.R. Martin cited this movie as one of the reasons he wanted Game of Thrones (2011) to be turned into a television series rather than a movie.
Author Philip Pullman's books were later adapted into
His Dark Materials (TV Series 2019-2022).

Evidently the studio interfered heavily with the ending, forcing the planned ending to be removed and instead be part of the sequel that was never filmed.

The film flopped badly in the US. IMDB blames the economy, but I think there was also religious controversy.
Definitely watch His Dark Materials though!
