Well of course "Quest for Fire"! That is probably the best caveman movie ever. The Ringo Starr movie is just a helluva lot tasteless-juvenile funnier than most caveman movies, so that is why it is tops for me.
I also liked the "Land of the Lost" TV series ...

yes it is based in a book. i haven't read it, but i know someone who did. He said there are controversial scenes in the book, but didn't go into details. Does it follow the book closely?

I have not read it myself, maybe someone here has?
There is a rape scene in the book and in the movie. These men were "Neanderthals" after all, but some of them were more thuggish than others. In that respect it could be a modern drama.
Spoiler:
I like how the sexy sensitive and gentle caveman hunk is introduced and then quickly has his head ripped off by a cave bear.
I do know that the crabby critics complained that the movie stripped the novel of its anthropological research. I think this is not quite entirely true, although the movie surely simplified things tremendously.
Author Jean M. Auel considers the novel and the five other books in her "Earth's Children" series to be "prehistorical fiction" rather than fantasy, because of its basis in (then) current research. Mind you, I did notice that some of the ideas in the movie have been revised recently with new archaeological studies. That is just the way science goes. But some of what she discusses continues to be supported by new research.

The author's treatment of unconventional sexual practices (which are central to her hypothesized nature-centered religions) and frequent explicit depictions of sex has earned the series a top twenty place on the American Library Association's list of the 100 Most Frequently Challenged Books of 1990–1999.
Has anyone here ever seen the uk tv series Primeval? it's a bit like land of the lost, but the opposite way round, with dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures going through "anomalies" and ending up in modern day (late 2000s-early 2010s) Britain. While majority is not FLM worthy (although in series 1 they did like to have the cute, ex Sclub7 singer, Hannah Spearitt (Abby) wandering around her flat wearing underwear and tight top) the only episode that would be of interest would be s2e5 where a young girl, Taylor Craig (played by Mabel Rogers) chases her dog through an anomaly.[Image]
