My version of Skalman's 16gb file - but re-encoded to a more download friendly 4.7gb
Deinterlaced, slight sharpen and a very slight denoise. Screenshot above. SRT english subtitle embedded in mkv - but not burnt into the video
It is 29.97fps - but that's the framerate of the original NTSC broadcast.

Why not remove the 3:2 pulldown to bring it to 23.976fps? Seems to me like you have less data per frame for no reason.

you're probably right.maybe somone with more tech skills could. I tried it in virtualdub 2 - but it didn't work. was happy it deinterlaced fine in handbrake so i didnt need to pre-process in virtualdubKingfisher wrote: Sat Nov 29, 2025 3:15 pm Why not remove the 3:2 pulldown to bring it to 23.976fps? David, it's so easy in Handbrake:you're probably right.maybe somone with more tech skills could.

You have no smooth movements because of this crappy framerate of 29.97 fps. It destroys the movie to my opinion.

my version looks a bit different from yours - which interlace detection options below that default would you recomend? I didn't know handbrake did inverse telecine - I can try it again with this.
There's not many camera pans in the film so it didn't bother me, or was noticable. Lots of static and very slow movements.
I nearly deleted the 16gb original as I was getting low on HDD space - glad i didn't if i'm going to make a 2nd attempt!
And logo question - is it possible to near-perfectly remove a TV logo like this - would you bother?

It's interesting how much filesize difference it makes applying even the weakest denoise filter (above screenshot) to a clip - and this film has a LOT of fine grain. This was using the same "22" test setting (normally I would do a 2pass encode at say 6000kbit average). The one with a bit more grain is 25% larger for otherwise the exact same settings of a 20 second test encode of the only whip-pan I can find in the film! Was testing the 23.97 fps - and yes, it's not tearing or doing anything odd!

Yes, it's possible for a perfect removal at that sort of size/stroke width. There are various options, but it depends on your processing power. Ranging from something like context-aware fill in After Effects, to something like DeepInPaint in Diamant (16GB VRAM). I am curious to see what ghost has to add, but I believe he uses something called "Hitpaw watermark remover"?David32441 wrote: Sat Nov 29, 2025 10:24 pm And logo question - is it possible to near-perfectly remove a TV logo like this - would you bother?
About your deinterlacing, may I suggest looking into Hybrid's QTGMC script? It has its problems, but I think it's considered the best free resource for dealing with broken cadence and interlacing. Hybrid is also way more powerful than Handbrake in general, but a bit more of a learning curve: https://www.videohelp.com/software/Hybrid
I myself find the best results with Adobe's deinterlace or Digital Vision's "DVO Deinterlace" or "DVO Three Two".

It's noticable all the time (at least for my eyes). You see the jerkiness every time the camera moves. It's a real shame because your movie really looks good. There's not many camera pans in the film so it didn't bother me, or was noticable.

I've re-encoded it with the deinterlace and 23.976fps. i'll post it later / tomorrow.

Thanks - i'll look up hitpaw. I was dissapointed that the Logo remover in virtualdub even with a matte generated from the logo was still averaging around the bounding box rectangle - it should average to the nearest pixel in the matte which is only at most ever 2-3 pixels away - and then the logo would dissapear much better!Kingfisher wrote: Sat Nov 29, 2025 11:00 pmYes, it's possible for a perfect removal at that sort of size/stroke width. I don't do much video encoding. But will note that Hybrid recomendation for next time.
I'd be interested to see what others thoughts are on the re-encode I post later. I can't see any deinterlace artifacts after the previous deinterlacing and i've played some scenes through at 1/4 and 1/2 speed and can't see any comb effects or odd stutteting on pans - which I have seen on bad video encoding. The worst of anything is the behind the scenes video clip from Mario und der Zauberer.
