Then stick with the vanilla eMule for now. Later, when you know your way around it better, you can check out the other versions.

A comparative study of ed2k clients could fill a book, so I won't go into that here. The short version for eMule Plus is that it has a terrific user interface and gives you tons of information about the clients you are downloading from and the files that you are downloading and sharing. Bad news is, it doesn't have KAD.

Maybe the users of the other clients could say a few words about each.

For what I guess your use is I'd probably stick with the standard client........you'll find it easier to set up than one of the modded versions with additional mod options. I believe the latest version goes some way towards router configuration avoiding manual port forwarding. My own choice would be to avoid the default ports & go for those towards the higher numerical end........some ISP's are catching on to the default ports for sharing applications & either blocking them or throttling.
I use the MorphXT client although I've used Applejuice which is what I believe ghost favours. Not much to choose between them......both good for releasing as additional friend upload slots are available. MorphXT assigns anonymous eMule users (i.e. emule-project.net) 'Funnynick' usernames which remain not only throughout the session but also when the application is closed & re-opened. This helps me assign slots to anonymous but regular users. Friend slots are also kept throughout the session & when closing & re-opening.

Good luck!

Always download from the web site of the program, never from any other wares site as those might have been tampered with.

If you prefer a different client, like eMule Plus or MorphXT, get the latest version of those from their respective web sites.
OK, one more question about that: Should I use the old client ports from 0.48 or the default ports provided by 0.49b?

Oh, and this... and I won't ask another thing.

Why do I only get half a dozen servers from this link? http://www.peerates.net/servers.php

1. Don't use the old eMule ports 4662 (I forget which is the other one) as that makes it far too easy for ISPs to block. Use the randomly generated non standard ports.

If your old eMule version was using non-standard ports, the new installation should have retained the same ports when you installed the new version into the same folder.

If you installed the new version in a different folder, you now have new ports. That is fine, but you need to do port-forwarding for these new ports just like you did with the old version.

2. Those are all the good ones that remain. :wall :( Remember to enable and connect to KAD as well as to one of these few servers.
