Two words: bluray upgrade!

12 yo Shirley Mills is back for an encore in this first-ever bluray edition of Child Bride (1938)

Be warned. The 1080p resolution and its much greater detail does have one drawback. Every brightness fluctuation and scratch that might be smoothed away by downconversion to 720x480 NTSC stands out. They did the best they could with very old source material. You may find brightness variations distracting in a few scenes but mostly it isn't that bad. Like watching an old movie in the theater, with a classic screen and projector setup.

The ordering of scenes is a little different in this version - so don't freak out half an hour in, when Jennie and Freddie don't go swimming on schedule. It happens around the 45 minute mark instead.

There is a commentary track on the disc, which has a female film historian's analysis and perspective on the movie. I found it interesting (even though I disagreed with her on certain points ). That track is included as a secondary audio.

The other day I was quite shocked to stumble across a bluray with this movie on it:

It went on sale May 5, 2020 so it's been out slightly less than a month. I ordered it immediately of course!

No subtitles on the disc though. And any subs you might have for the DVD versions won't fit this one, because of the rearrangement of scenes. Sorry.

I did a new cut of the BluRay-Rip provided by deadman.

All scenes are rearranged as in the original DVD:

I used a 25fps timeline in Premiere Pro, so it got a bit shorter.

That is some really mad dedication. I would have thought it would be easier to edit the subtitles to fit the video rather than vice-versa. But then if the point of the subtitles is to understand the thick hillbilly accents, probably not. I'm impressed.

The ordering of scenes is a little different in this version - apparently the DVDs came from a "remix" print, whereas this is the version that made the rounds back in the day, with all scenes in their original order.

Actually my understanding is that the blu-ray restores the original scene order of the film, and that previous videotapes and dvds were the ones that were reordered, based on a long-ago-reordered film cut. When I watched the blu-ray I thought it now made more sense, since I watch this for the PLOT, man!

However, wanting to see it the way you've seen it many times already is a perfectly legitimate reason to have it in that order. I don't think there are too many people around who remember it from its original run, either.

Hmm we'll never know what was the original order of scenes, but the DVD "cut" makes sense to me.
At the end of the swimming part you can see a dark cloudy sky and you can hear thunder. In the next scenes (where men are talking) you still can hear the thunder.
