when you say "verify with other sources" do you mean the members of this fine site, who seem to have a wealth of knowlege when it comes to actresses ages. :D

Trust in homework. Plenty of members here will at least tell you where they got their information, and many include links to the actual pages. You can go and see for yourself. Do some additional research if the information seems sketchy. IMDb is a good source, and is usually accurate, but not always - no site is perfect 100% of the time. In particular when production is just one date (often only a month and year) they are more likely to be wrong than when they list a specific date range.

If you can find interviews of the director and/or actors in question that will often tell you quite a lot. For example, there are interviews with Irena Kranjc where she talks about making this movie. I couldn't find an exact DOB for Rosa Marchant but there are several detailed interviews where she discusses her experience on set, including the fact that she was 16 but looked much younger.

Social media is another good source to use. At least for more recent times. Kids these days document their lives online, complete with pictures and video. Back in the 70's of course there was no Instagram, Facebook, or TikTok. When you can find adult accounts of these actresses it can sometimes help though.

I did do a search for her DOB which is what caused my confusion because that made her 17 LOL.

It's like with Maladolescenza, i've heard that many different ages for the girls, anywhere between 11 and 15 :D

deadman wrote: Wed Sep 18, 2024 8:48 pm As for the subtitles ... ChatGPT is more erratic than I thought. While attempting to fix the sync issue I ran into multiple problems. It shifted the lines of dialogue by 1 - that is, timecodes were accurate but for example the text from line 500 was appearing in line 501 instead. After 519 for some odd reason it started dropping the timecodes from each line entirely. It also halted at one point like it was finished. I asked why it stopped (in the 570s somewhere) and it replied that this seemed like a natural point to pause the dialogue (???). So the first time through ChatGPT may have started altering the timecodes at the point where it goes out of sync. An obvious statement we tend to forget sometimes: AI is not completely reliable.

I'll try fixing the subs by copying and pasting the correct timecodes manually (the translations themselves seem okay). This will be a bit tedious and take some time though. I think if I use GPT for this again I'll translate a handful of lines at a time rather than uploading a whole document. It'll take longer but give me more control over the process to make sure it doesn't get botched.
I'm going to shamelessly plug https://github.com/Cerlancism/chatgpt-s ... translator again as the author has spent a lot of time addressing this very issue. The program detects line shifting and will automatically re-translate the affected area line-by-line. I almost never see subtitles on the wrong line anymore.

By comparison, SubtitleEdit uses a token balancing strategy that is absolutely terrible and gets it wrong all the time.

Which girl are you talking about?

Actually, we know that the IMDb listed dates of birth and filming dates for Maladolescenza are both accurate thanks to a number of court cases in different countries in which this information was entered as evidence. Both Germany and the Netherlands ended up banning the film as a consequence of lawsuits filed there. Lara Wendel and Eva Ionesco were indeed 11 years old at the time it was made. Their male costar Martin Loeb was 17.

If it doesn't require a subscription, I'll give it a shot!

You will need to sign up to create an API key. And the free ones might be too restricted to use. I put $5 on my account and it lasts me the entire year since each 90 minute film is only about a penny.

Thank you deadman for looking into this in detail.

That is the only real human error that I see in this process: asking a computer "why?" That is a question that the vast majority of humans struggle with answering, so they are incapable of teaching a computer how to do so with any kind of usefulness! (Deep Thought, what is the meaning of life, the universe, and everything? Answer: 42.) What the computer learns is consistent with the same sort of answers humans give: evasions and idiocies. Think about a parent attempting a rational conversation with a toddler... or a police officer with a meth head.

Finding information about film shooting dates is difficult because the online documentation is inconsistent. If the information was easy to get, it would routinely be in an IMDB listing. I think it is too much work!

Human: Why did you stop there?

ChatGPT: [shrugs virtual shoulders] Seemed like as good a place as any ...

If I didn't know better, I might think this was some sort of passive aggressive defiant behavior.

When you see exact dates, it sometimes means there's an article somewhere that states the production period. More often I think it comes from the press kit. Someone attending Cannes or whatever film festival where the movie premieres may get their hands on a copy, for example. Otherwise you're right: exact start date to exact end date is hard to determine. In the days before Amazon bought out IMDb and proceeded to close the discussion boards, ordinary users would contribute material. This is why you'll notice more recent indie and non-US films have practically no background information beyond basic casting. Sometimes not even a plot summary or a single picture. They gave their helpful user base a giant middle finger, and most returned the favor.

Even interviews with directors usually only reveal, if you're lucky, that filming was a certain year and a certain time of year (which may be enough). Quite a few movies have nothing whatsoever on shooting dates though. It's only going to be out there if someone involved with the production decided to give that information out publicly.

The internet seems to give a wide range of ages when you try to find out. For example, the girl on the album cover of The Scorpions - Virgin Killer, there's 3 different ages doing the rounds, 10, 12 and 14, personally i'd say she looks 12.

I was going to post a picture of the album cover, but i don't know if i'd be allowed :D

I think I've posted this before but it works pretty well. Offers multiple versions of GPT (3.5, 4o, 4o mini, 4-Turbo) as well as other translators
