Every time I see this thread bumped I hope someone's found a new version, maybe a nice 1080p web-dl. You got my hopes up goku!
I will look and ask around with some of my French contacts.

Just being a smartass. But if you could actually find a high quality upgrade, that would be amazing! I've done some serious looking around on this title and come up with zip. Always the same mediocre source.

Yeah with those rare films it’s unlikely to find upgrades but you never know. You yourself surprised me with some of those Brazilian flicks in 1080p.hdtv (Alba Valeria).

Found this unlisted YouTube Video that doesn’t have the tv watermark:

And the other video on that channel got the watermark again: https://yewtu.be/watch?v=GH2jTgIuXKE

A commercial VHS is still an improvement from an over-the-air recorded VHS. Are the pictures of something you HAVE? If so, do you have the equipment and know-how to record it?

I confess that while I had decades of use from videotapes, I never digitized them. In later years when I had tapes that never got commercial upgrades, I kept looking online until I found someone else's rip!

Hey, I am sure many Europeans here already know this, so excuse me if I am pointing out something obvious, but for those not aware, I believe the title of this film is an interesting play on words: "L'enfant d'eau" is pronounced the same or very closely as "L'enfant do", from the French children's song Dodo l'enfant do.

Dodo is of course baby talk for s'eepytime. The song had a brief moment in the film AI Artificial Intelligence where the nanny mecha sings to David.

The VHS was listed on Amazon but isn’t being sold anymore it seems. Digitizing wouldn’t be an issue for me and I even know numerous people that could do it with the best equipment possible.

pillowbaker-
I have no knowledge of French puns so thank you! As this movie deals with island castaways, "Water Child" at least makes sense. But what does "dodo l'enfant do" actually MEAN? "Sleepy sleep, baby sleep"?

goku-
Aww, you got my hopes up that you actually HAD it!

If I remember correctly, they came up with an improved technique for digitizing VHS that gives results closer to DVD than traditional VHS rip (although still short of disc quality). Don't remember the specifics though. I have no tapes left, and no working VCR, so I paid only minimal attention.

Any controversy surrounding this movie I don't really understand. It's neither explicit nor an exploitation flick. I find it to be quite innocent, for the most part, but that's just me - a little bit of sexual content is an inherent part of coming of age stories because ... that's the reality of being a teenager. It's always possible we could see a DVD or blu-ray of this film. Never say never. I wouldn't have expected movies like l'immoralita or Laura to get bluray releases. But an amzn 1080p web-dl file is more likely, and could show up at some point. Fingers crossed!

I agree with your take on the film.

I have VHS players and I think I have an analog output to HDMI adapter, so in theory I could manage it with the equipment I have even though my old computer with the analog inputs is non-functional. Whatever the improved technique is, it would probably involve spending much MORE money.

That depends on whether it's hardware or software based. If it's just special software, you might be out a few hundred dollars for a license - assuming you can't find a pirate copy. If specialized equipment is involved then yeah, you'd be talking lots more money. In that case it's probably easier to find a company that will do the transfer for you. Their one time fee would be even cheaper than a new software package.
