Since some weeks I'm working with my first Mac with the new ARM Technology (Mac Mini M2) after using an iMac from 2013... Anyway... After Apple announced the new ARM's lot of YouTubers reporting, how fast that machines are so I was very excited to test the Videoconverting with Handbrake. Well, my test results made me not so happy, because I didn't got the feeling that's now even faster as in my very old iMac with Intel (inside).

Since the beginning of the last week I know, what was wrong. Handbrake was not fully supportet the power of the ARM Technolgy, especially the hardware-accelerated AV1 encoder. Now it does and the result is very nice.

A movie with 90 Minutes of Playtime will be now converted an MKV File in under 6 Minutes (1080p) 4K I can't test, because I have not any 4K Stuff. Without that new Version it takes around 21 Minutes on the M2 Mac Mini.

So if you are have a new Mac with ARM (M1, M2, M3), download the new Handbrake in Version 1.7.0 and enjoy the speed.

PS: To using the full coding speed, open from the Presets the Submenu "Hardware" and select "Apple Video Toolbox". You can select between Full HD an 4K.
There is also an Option in the Advanced Preferences where you can tick "Activate VideoToolbox Hardwaredecoder", but I did not recognized any boost in the other Presets of Handbrake. Not sure if this will be changed in a next Update.

That is fast! I hope they've not just dropped the quality (block searching). On my PC with a 350Euro graphics card I can get about 90fps at a "slow setting". The super fast settings looks very poor.

I made now three Screenshots from an Intro-Font (Movie: Totem) and the converting from mkv to 1080p and the new Codec. The results are looking the same.

Another positive thing is, that the filesize is also a bit smaller. The 1080p30 Version have a size of 1,73 GB and the new Apple Hardware Version having a size of 1,6 GB.
